  • Will I get actual digital files?

Yes, every session comes with professionally edited and retouched digital files.

  • Where do the sessions take place?

Sessions take place in my comfortable home studio, in Washington, DC, not far from the Cleveland Park Metro station. Full newborn sessions are also available as Hybrid sessions, where the posed part of the shoot takes place in my studio and the on-location lifestyle family part is photographed on a different day in the comfort of your home ($100 travel charge applies).

  • Is it true that I must schedule my newborn session right after the baby is born? Why is that?

Actually, the best time to schedule your newborn session is before the baby is born. We will set up a tentative date, and you will adjust it depending on your baby’s actual day of birth. You will have too many things to take care of right after the baby arrives. It is easy to miss the narrow window of opportunity to capture those brand new tiny fingers with even tinier fingernails, pouty lips, cute little baby toes. Ideally a baby should be under 10-14 days to be truly “posable”. After that the baby sleeps less and wakes up easily. The skin begins to flake, and around 20 days of age baby acne is a very common problem. Technically a baby is a newborn until 6 weeks, but to take full advantage of a professional newborn photography session, try to schedule your session for the time between your baby’s 7th and 14th days.

  • What if I am too tired to go anywhere so soon after the delivery. Isn’t it better to have an at home session?

Whenever possible, I strongly recommend that clients come to my studio and relax while I take care of everything. I offer a whole collection of newborn props and sophisticated equipment that is only available in the studio environment. All the clothes, posing blankets, and wraps for your baby are provided in the studio, so you don’t need to bring anything beyond what you would take to go to a doctor’s office or to see a friend. Baby wipes, diapers, breast pads, Boppy pillows with covers washed after every use, and fresh pacifiers are also available in the studio. You will be able to sit back and take a break you might badly need during the first few weeks after your baby is born. I even had some clients take a nap while I was posing the baby.

  • What if my baby doesn’t sleep, cries all the time, and generally does not cooperate?

After your session is booked I will send you comprehensive information about the best way you can prepare yourself and your baby for the photo session. A newborn session guide, a dressing for your session guide, etc. In my experience, parents who followed the prep guide had their baby happy and sleepy during the session. That said, some babies do suffer from gas, and on occasion babies do not sleep thru their session. Some are wide awake the entire time!! We can usually still create excellent images, especially if they are wrapped. Babies are babies and they will cry. Fortunately, time and effort I spent learning soothing techniques and my experience working with newborn babies equipped me with knowledge and skills that will most likely allow us to continue with a session.

  • I did not think about photography during my pregnancy, but now my baby is one week old, and I really want to have a newborn session for her. She changes by the hour! Is it too late?

Due to the unique nature of newborn photography, I recommend parents to schedule their session early in their pregnancy to reserve a spot. But if you didn’t, and the baby is already here, feel free to call or e-mail! I will do my best to fit you in!

  • My baby’s skin is red/yellow/peels/has pimples. She does not look like those perfectly beautiful babies you show in your portfolio. Can you do something about it?

Of course! I carefully edit and retouch every image for a long time. I studied special techniques of retouching newborn images. Jaundice, red blotches, “stork bites” are common for newborn skin. For a professional newborn photographer, they mean two simple questions:

    1. How much would parents like to leave/remove,
    2. How much time it will take during post processing work.

That’s it! See examples of before editing and after editing below.

  • I expect twins. How much more will it cost me to have a newborn session for them?

I believe that it is unfair to penalize you for bringing into the world twice as much cuteness. I found that twin sessions, although they might be tricky to complete in less than 3-4 hours, are often the most rewarding and moving for the whole family. The joy I derive from seeing how happy my clients are, is well worth the extra effort that twins require during their newborn session.

  • Our baby is almost two months old. I would still want to have a professional photo session for him. What can we do now?

I love photographing kids of other ages, but newborns and the first year are my favorite ages for photo sessions. During this short 12-month period, kids change faster than they do later in life, and it is exciting to document this year for parents. I schedule sessions to capture photos of the most important milestone steps babies make during their first year, after I hear from parents that a milestone has been reached. The exact ages differ from baby to baby. I don’t try to photograph specific ages, instead I create a visual record of the important stages of growth. Please refer to my Baby’s First Year Sessions and Plans section to learn more.

  • How about older kids?

Please look through my Portfolio. I love studio and on location sessions for kids of preschool age. Some are siblings of my newborn clients, some are past clients, others simply come for a birthday shoot. Please contact me for more details and pricing.

I will be happy to answer any other questions you may have.
